Attack (1956) Jack Palance, a portrait of a real man.
Attack (1956) Jack Palance, a portrait of a real man.
Captain Cooney (Eddie Albert) is a bombastic, but incompetent, military leader who jeopardizes the lives of the men under his control. (reminds me of the Bush administration). His lapdog of a colonel (Lee Marvin) tries his best to sweep Cooney's errors under the rug, but soon the dastardly leaders have a problem on their hands in the form of Lt. Costa (Jack Palance).
Lt. Costa swears that Cooney is a dead man if the men are sent on another poorly-run, deadly mission. "I swear Cooney, you don't give me backup, I swear, I will shove a grenade down your throat, and pull the pin"...When Cooney puts Costa and his men in another tight spot on the Belgian front, Lt. Costa -- who suffers a crushed arm underneath a tank-- sets out to keep his word.
A priceless life lesson, that's prevelant today, a brutal portrait of war,
The film is a war movie that makes you think--it is not intended to merely entertain. To emphasize the point, we learn that Robert Strauss' character is Jewish, and how he would be treated if captured by the SS.
Most of the American soldiers are depicted as brave, honest, dedicated men, laying their lives on the line every day as real men are portrayed. Nevertheless...as "Attack" shows us...sometimes people are put in positions of authority for reasons that have nothing to do with merit--whether it is the military, in business, government or other fields of endeavour. In this case, of course, it is a problem that costs lives. It is a powerful message in today's war situation.

That crack about the Bush administration is a gratuitous, inappropriate, snide remark. It reveals more about the commentator than it does anything else.
